The brand new, shiny Alchemist opened in Media City earlier this month and as a huge lover of the current city centre branches I had to go and check out this new venue. Well what can I say, it is an absolute gem of a building, literally! The architectural design depicts an angular and obscure shape in a striking metallic golden colour like a semi-precious stone. The building is very futuristic and modern, fitting in perfectly with the up and coming Salford Quays. It has prime position at the head of The Quays which also means the views when you’re sat inside are really amazing. On a clear day, the location is just fantastic and the kind of place you will want to bring all your friends. The new Alchemist really is the kind of place you show off about having visited.
Once inside, the attention to detail doesn’t end. The interior is just stunning, each wall and surface different to the other. The designers have really tapped into the copper and marble trends yet not in a cliché way. The placing of the copper piping and metallic designs are unique and work so well.
As I am currently following The Body Coach 90 Day SSS plan, I tried to pick something super healthy from the menu. I needed something with high protein and carbs as I had just done a workout. So, I chose scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with a side of toast. Tom went for the steak and hashbrowns. What really caught my eye about both dishes was the portion size. Both were very modest and presented beautifully. I find a lot of brunch venues tend to go OTT on portion size leaving you too full but this was just what I needed.
We also chose some of their mocktails because The Alchemist cocktails really are something else. You can read a little more about that here. I went for ‘Kaleing me softly’ – a kale, apple and elderflower based cocktail that was so yummy and refreshing! It also look amazing with a huge bunch of kale coming out of it! Tom went for the ‘Banana Manama’ which was essentially a concoction of banana, malt and white chocolate foam and it was so so delicious! Very banana-ry but just what you would want at breakfast time. We also both has an americano which came with the cutest little milk jars.
My only criticism was that the restaurant felt a little over-staffed. It seemed as though a lot of the staff were in training so weren’t quite at ease with what they were doing. As a result the service felt a little wooden. However I am sure this is something that will iron itself out over the coming weeks.
I definitely need to come back for dinner and cocktails. I image that restaurant will be beautiful at night amongst all the lights of Salford Quays during the evening. It is perfectly placed if you are going to The Lowry too and ideal for anyone living in or around Media City.
Thanks so much to the team for having us, I am sure the new venue will be a huge success!
