Back in October I went to Didsbury to see the newly refurbished Pizza Express and try out the Autumn menu. I won’t repeat myself too much in this introduction but this popular Italian restaurant really is the kind of place you can keep on going back to. You know the food is going to be delicious and it’s not too expensive. Pizza Express is childhood favourite for me and I will always love eating here. Last week I went to the newly refurbished Oxford Road branch and tried out the festive menu.
I have been to the Manchester Oxford Road branch quite a few times before now and it was really nice to see the new decor. I love how it took inspiration from Pizza Express’ historical background. Jazz, art, Soho London and authentic Italian ingredients can all be seen in the new artwork. The new layout really has opened up the Restaurant and it feels so friendly and welcoming. Of course the addition of Christmas decorations made the space nice and festive too.
Food from the Christmas menu, in my past experience, is amazing. I can confirm that once again it really really is. Pizza Express always come up with great festive pizzas. This year’s are Porchetta Natale Romana and Cauliflower Cheese Romana. The former involves pulled hog roast with a herb stuffing (this won me over straight away), pancetta, Mozzarella and rosemary. I had this pizza and it was so so tasty! The flavours were so strong and delicious.
Tom went for the Cauliflower Cheese Romana which involves cauliflower, pecorino cheese, garlic oil based on a creamy cheese and mustard sauce. There was no tomato base on this pizza making it very unique. It tasted phenomenal though and is a definite must try this year. The pizzas are so huge and thankfully you can take your leftovers home with you to enjoy later.
To begin, we shared two starters. We tried the Manzo Croccette from the Christmas menu and the garlic mozzarella bread from the normal menu. The garlic bread was the perfect starter size. Often garlic breads come absolutely huge and can fill you up a bit too much. This though was nice and small so that you just got a delicious taster for it. The Manzo Croccette has a similar flavour to the Porchetta Natale Romana pizza. These pulled beef and Chianti Croccettes were very yummy.
The festive dessert menu is pretty amazing. Choose from Snowball Doughballs, Panetonne Cheesecake and Jaffa profiteroles. I could have easily tried all three of these! I went for the classic Snowball Doughballs and didn’t regret my choice. The Doughballs come warm and gooey, sprinkled with cinnamon and icing sugar, ready to dip into the vanilla cream dip which melts in your mouth. Tom tried the cheesecake which has delicious chocolate chips and orange marmalade pieces in it! There are of course so many amazing options on the normal dessert menu too.
Finally, the staff at this Pizza Express branch were so friendly and welcoming. They were great at recommending specific dishes on the menu. Our waitor told us of his love for the Cauliflower Cheese Romana which is one of the reasons we tried it and I am so glad he did! They were so attentive and made our experience there even better.
I really do recommend visiting Pizza Express this Christmas and if you’re near to the Oxford Road branch it’s worth seeing their fantastic new look. You can also use this voucher to receive 30% off your food at the Oxford Road branch! (T&Cs apply).
